Play to your strengths!

Did you know that “People who use their strengths every day are six times more likely to be engaged on the job” according to Gallup research.  Therefore I believe we should focus on playing towards our strengths versus trying to fix our weaknesses.  But conventional wisdom tells us we should work on fixing our weaknesses.

The problem with that philosophy is we only have so much time, money and energy to invest in anything.  If we invest our resources in fixing our weaknesses, they will get better, but likely only go from weak to mediocre.  Plus if we are focusing on our weaknesses that means we are not using our strengths and therefore they will atrophy going from strong to mediocre.  Thus working our way into a place of mediocrity.

A better philosophy is to invest our resources in developing our strengths, taking us from strong to great.  Plus playing to our strengths energizes us thereby giving us more energy to use our weaknesses which leads to better performance there as well.

Bottom line, if you want to create a team of engaged high performers, help your people discover and play to their strengths!
